Family holidays can be a nightmare to plan. You want somewhere that will keep the whole family entertained, with plenty of activities to keep the younger ones busy. Austria is the perfect destination for a family friendly activity holiday. Tyrol in Western Austria, is located near the Brenner Pass, this giant mountain playground is full of things to do for all the family.

The charming Inntaler Hof hotel offers stunning scenery, a children’s club, playroom, playground, tennis courts, pool and a spa where you can relax while the children are being entertained. Perfect.

The area is ideal for walking with lots of well-marked routes to suit all abilities and ages. A gentle walk along the shores of Lake Möserer takes you to Seefeld where there is a public outdoor pool with water slides – perfect for cooling off before you head back through the pine forest. If you want to extend your day, take a cable car from Seefeld to Harmelekopf where you can take in the spectacular views of the Zugspitze range.

Nearby, Leutaschklamm Gorge is perfect for the little ones – where a variety of spirits are said to live, there are interpretative panels about the spirits along the path. The dramatic views and scenery make it worth a trip even if you don’t want to look for fairies.

The capitol Innsbruck is well-worth a visit and can be accessed by train from Seefeld if you don’t want to drive. The city is surrounded by mountains and decorated with Baroque architecture; wander through the arcaded streets and visit the Imperial Palace. Look out for the unusual Goldenes Dachl or golden roof – an extraordinary Gothic window decorated with 2,657 gilded copper tiles.

Visit the city’s fantastic Alpen Zoo, to get there take a ride on the Hungerburgbahn Funicular Railway for spectacular views over Innsbruck. The zoo is home to a wide range of animals that can be found in the Alps including bears, wolves, marmots, golden eagles, otters, wild boar, ibex and vultures. The highest zoo in Europe, it only houses animals native to the Alpine areas and somewhere the whole family will love. If your children are animal lovers – there is also a farm near Mösern which is home to forty goats, eight deer, five ponies, eight moufflon, four llamas, three donkeys, one eagle owl and one parrot!

There are a whole range of fantastic castles in nearby Bavaria. Schloss Linderhof built by King Ludwig features a grand table that lowers down to the kitchen below to be loaded with food, a lake in the grounds and fairy grotto. Schloss Neuschwanstein, the inspiration for Sleeping Beauty’s castle at Disneyland is another stunning castle and features in a variety of films.

The Leutasch Games Park features mini golf, go karts and playgrounds – all set against the beautiful mountain backdrop. It boasts a thrilling summer toboggan run which twists and turns down the mountainside for 1.2 km!

The tourist office situated in Seefeld also organise a weekly activity programme for children over six including activities such as mountain donkey rides, llama trekking, canoeing, magic lessons and bread-making. The area is also great for cycling with lots of routes for all ages.
