This year, a car hire holiday could be a great value for money option, according to an article in The Telegraph by Charles Starmer-Smith. In the article, Starmer-Smith states that a fall in fuel prices in Europe, together with car rental companies slashing prices in order to attract more customers, has made European car hire holidays a much more attractive option than they were twelve months ago.

In the article, Starmer-Smith cites research carried out by the Post Office, which claims that “the average price of a litre of diesel has fallen by up to 32 per cent since last year, and unleaded petrol by up to 12 per cent”.

The Post Office compared the costs of diesel and unleaded petrol in 12 European countries. Diesel was cheapest in Austria, Spain and Sweden and was most expensive in Norway and Britain. Switzerland proved to be the cheapest for unleaded petrol, with Sweden also offering great value for money, whilst the cost of petrol in The Netherlands, Germany and Italy has risen.

According to The Telegraph, the research also revealed that car rental prices have “been cut by as much as a third in an attempt to encourage people to keep travelling”.
