When visiting Malta many tourists spend their time lying on the beaches, visiting the advertised restaurants, or chilling by the hotel pools, and then taking tour buses to the temples. This is all wonderful when looking for sunshine and a bit of history, but there is much more to Malta than the regular tourist spots.

Malta’s government has made a point of asking local councils to draw up itineraries that will offer authentic Malta tours that will allow locals and tourists to engage. Tourists don’t really get to see the wonderful villages and experience their hospitality, real local cuisine, and unique characteristics. Minister of Tourism Mario de Marco believes the unique heritage and culture of Malta will appeal to tourists. For them to experience the genuine Maltese culture will be a coup for the island and visitors alike.

Naturally Malta has some amazing tourist attractions that are offered in tours. The magnificent Neolithic temples, Mdina, St John’s Cathedral and the many family attractions in Valletta already turn Malta holidays into an incredible adventure, but with the more authentic offerings a visit to Malta is unlike any other holiday.

Speaking to several delegates from local councils, de Marco requested tourism itineraries from each council that would offer tourists something distinctly Maltese in each of their towns. Working as one there is an agreement that visitors should not be taken on tour buses and then left to their own devices to just wander around as this will leave them missing out on what these towns and villages actually have to offer.

The economic benefits that come along with boosting tourism in Malta will serve to benefit these smaller towns and go on to further increase the popularity of Malta, Gozo and Comino.

With the climate in Malta it’s a given that the island will be a year-round tourist destination. The 300 days of sun affords more opportunity to enjoy the diving and tours. With its many traditions, street festivals, architectural marvels, local churches and monasteries, typical cuisine, village market days and the fantastic Malta hospitality, why would you want to go anywhere else?
