In the third part of our series about car hire holidays in the Lake Como region of Italy, we take a look at the route from Como to Bellagio.

It will take you about 40 minutes to drive from Como to Bellagio in your hire car. To get to there, leave Como and head north on the SS583. The route will take you through a number of pretty towns and villages.

Torno, for example, is a village which dates back to the Middle Ages and has a number of interesting buildings, including the Church of San Giovanni. However, the village is best known for the Villa Pliniana, which was constructed in the 16th century and was visited by the poet Shelley and his wife, Mary Shelley, in 1818. The villa took its name from a spring on the land which had been mentioned by Pliny the Younger in his writings. When the villa was constructed, the spring was transformed into a fountain in the courtyard.

The route will then take you to through villages such as Quarzano and Careno, on to Nesso, which sits on the hill slopes, overlooking the lake. There are a number of bars and restaurants where you can take a break and enjoy the views while you eat and drink. You can also stop to look at the waterfall near Nesso, where the Tuf and Nose streams meet.

Continuing along the SS583 in your hire car will take you through Somazzana, Pescau, Lezzeno, Vergonese and the small fishing village of Loppia and on to Bellagio.

In the next part of our series of Lake Como car hire holiday articles, we will look at what Bellagio has to offer.
